Clean This First! 5 Spring Cleaning Tips

While most of us are working from home and keeping the kids focused on schoolwork in this new, virtual environment, we may also find ourselves with a little more time on our hands. And while Carnation Home Cleaning is still serving our clients in their homes, we do understand that you may want to take on some of the deep cleaning yourself. To that end, we’re providing you with some spring cleaning tips on what you may want to focus on cleaning first.

Why Spring Cleaning Tips Are Important

Did you know that the act of cleaning may be good for your health? According to a recent Wired article, cleaning acts as a type of meditation that helps calm and center the brain. The current state of the world, which is keeping most people in their homes and away from others, is causing stress and anxiety. But repetitive tasks, including having a daily schedule and cleaning, counteract those negative emotions.

Whether you choose to clean, cook, or actually meditate, you’re doing good things for your wellbeing by keeping your brain active.

Tip 1: Have a Game Plan

Before you get started with your major spring cleaning tips, it’s smart to have a game plan. You may choose to tackle one room at a time or complete a certain task, such as dusting everything, before moving on to the next. Either way, the project won’t seem as large and daunting when you go step by step. Plus, you’ll be able to rack up some wins along the way.

Tip 2: Declutter

One of the biggest ways to move through spring cleaning tips faster is by cleaning up all of the clutter. Even a professional house cleaning company won’t do all of the decluttering for you, mostly because they don’t know where you want things. Create different boxes or piles of your clutter: file, toss, and “maybe.” Your maybe box is for the things you’re not quite sure about. Be sure to schedule time to deal with your piles as well; otherwise, you’ll just keep the clutter out in piles or boxes.

Tip 3: Tackle Deep Cleaning

You know those things you almost never clean in your home? Now is the time to pay some attention to them. They might include:

  • Cleaning out the refrigerator, stove, and microwave
  • Dusting/sweeping the top of and behind appliances
  • Taking down and washing drapes and shower curtains
  • Emptying, cleaning, and organizing kitchen cabinets and pantry
  • Washing reusable grocery bags
  • Dusting ceiling fans

If you have kids at home, you can make it a game. No doubt there will be coins behind appliances or under couch cushions. Challenge the kids to see what they can find while cleaning.

Tip 4: Wash the Windows

Windows are something we just don’t think about in everyday cleaning. Change that with your spring cleaning tips this year. With a simple vinegar or lemon juice mix, your glass will be sparkling. Be sure to clean inside and out, and open windows to clean in the gutters. Also, take out screens and give them a good hosing off in the backyard. You’ll absolutely see the results.

Tip 5: Disinfect

Regardless what virus or bug is going around, every house needs a good disinfecting from time to time. This is especially true if you have small children or pets. Most plastic toys can run through the dishwasher, and cloth toys can either be washed or tossed in the dryer to disinfect them. Remember to focus on germs in high-traffic areas, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and entryways.
